Systems engineering in service of learning.

Loren’s career has moved across industries that were transformed by new technology: drafting, animation, game production, the web, panoramic media, and now artificial intelligence. That experience informs a practical view of change—respect the expertise, preserve what matters, and build the next system around the people it must serve.

The same way a complex engineering program depends on requirements, interfaces, verification, and human judgment, a useful learning experience depends on sound sources, intentional storytelling, accessibility, measurement, and continuous improvement.

Earth Traveler · IBM Austin era

A mapped panoramic city before Street View.

While working in professional training at IBM in Austin, Loren began an independent experiment in entering real places through the web. He photographed Austin on film and joined the scenes to an aerial map, place descriptions, and non-linear navigation.

The surviving archive contains both IBM HotMedia and Apple QuickTime VR editions. Earth Traveler predates Google Maps (2005) and Street View (2007); it is best understood as an independently created precursor in spirit, not as a claim of direct corporate lineage.

Interactive learning before “immersive learning” had a name.

The course made parametric mathematics, Bezier and Hermite curves, B-splines, surfaces, and solid modeling visible and manipulable. Its original interface and lesson structure still render; its central interactions now run in a responsive, plugin-free browser laboratory.

The period interface remains visible as evidence while the mathematics has been selectively reconstructed in HTML5 Canvas.

    Training moves to the web

    At IBM in Austin, Loren helped move professional education from campus-based instruction toward early web delivery. A colleague’s work with IBM HotMedia—Java-based interactive rich media—helped open a larger question: could the web make a real place explorable?

    A map becomes a doorway

    As an independent experiment, Loren photographed Austin on film, processed and scanned the frames, stitched the panoramas, and connected 38 viewpoints to an aerial map. He authored Earth Traveler in both IBM HotMedia and Apple QuickTime VR—years before Google Maps and Street View reached the public.

    Learning becomes interactive

    At Georgia Tech, Loren created a graduate-level interactive course in computer-aided geometric design under Dr. David W. Rosen. Its 23 lessons and 25 original interactions helped students see the mathematics behind curves, surfaces, solids, CAD, manufacturing, and game graphics.

    From components to consequences

    As a U.S. Navy technical program manager and weapons-systems integration lead, Loren worked on Virginia-class submarine launcher systems, Special Operations payloads, and multimillion-dollar research and development. That work reinforced the discipline of connecting people, requirements, interfaces, risk, and mission.

    National places become enterable

    Through Visual Construction, Loren has produced immersive experiences for the Smithsonian, the Supreme Court, Arlington National Cemetery, the Office of the Secretary of Defense, museums, exhibitions, and public-history programs—work that has been viewed by millions.

    XR becomes learning infrastructure

    The current work unites high-resolution immersive imaging, accessible experience design, instructional systems, analytics, and multimodal AI. The goal is not novelty. It is durable, source-grounded learning that can reach a classroom, a visitor, or an entire state.

Loren serves on the Board of Directors of the International Virtual Reality Professionals Association as Director of Education. The role extends the work beyond individual commissions: helping an international community of immersive-media professionals advance XR-based learning, responsible practice, and public understanding.
